Toynbee, Arnold (Joseph)
(14 abr. 1889, Londres, Inglaterra–22 oct. 1975, York, Yorkshire).

Historiador inglés. Veterano profesor de la Universidad de Londres y del Royal Institute of International Affairs, ejerció además distintos cargos en el Foreign Office. Es conocido sobre todo por su Estudio de la historia (1934–1961, 12 vol.), en el que plantea una filosofía de la historia a partir del análisis del auge y decadencia de 26 civilizaciones. Algunas de las críticas que se le hicieron a su Estudio fueron el haber hecho uso de mitos y metáforas como si tuvieran un valor comparable al de la evidencia histórica y el haberse apoyado en una visión de la religión como fuerza regenerativa. Otras obras de Toynbee son Civilization on Trial [La civilización puesta a prueba] (1948), East to West [El mundo y Occidente] (1958) y Hellenism [El helenismo; historia de la civilización] (1959).
